Pick Up Litter Parade
Jungle Theatre Company organised a highly successful Pick Up Litter Parade, a gathering in December during the summer festive season. JTC and KEAG (Kommetjie Environmental Awareness Group) conducted an anti –litter street theatre on the beachfront areas to the mouth of Zandvlei with the large puppets. Grade 4 Learners from three local schools (Muizenberg Junior, Levana Primary and Zerilda Park Primary) and other local interest and cause groups were invited to participate in the event. Learners from each school showcased their large puppets in the beachfront areas of Muizenberg and Zandvlei.

Using a parade with puppets, puppeteers, costumes, musicians, drummers took the chore out of picking up litter and disposing of waste in dustbins and encouraged beach goers to have fun while putting litter in the right places, developing a culture of public cleanliness and recycling.

4 SMART new shows!

The JTC has 4 new plays that are based on the environmental themes from “The Smart Living Hand Book” published by the City of Cape Town in line with the school curriculum.

1 Hoerikwaggo

" Hoerikwaggo" is a fun, interactive, educational play focusing on the importance of Table Mountain as an example of biodiversity and cultural diversity.  The play concentrates on the natural environment of Table Mountain, with particular focus on indigenous flora, the diversity of animal life and guidelines on how to appreciate and conserve the mountain.

It also exposes the mountain as a cultural melting pot that has always been in the hearts of all Capetonians. Drawing from Khoi San, Cape Malay and Dutch history and mythology, the play illustrates to learners how disparate backgrounds and cultures have formed South Africa’s rich history.

2  Father Sun
“Father Sun” is an educational play about energy and climate change.    The sun is fed up with people burning his ancient sunlight in the form of fossil fuels. The sun calls out to a family of consumers who are struggling with power cuts. He tells them how air pollution from electricity and petrol are causing him to change the climate. The family decided to change their life-style and find ways to use the suns free energy. “Father Sun” uses images music and audience participation to make the learning experience fun for children and teenagers.

3  Rubbish Wrap
“Rubbish Wrap” deals with the concept of  waste.  The play uses song, dance, comedy characters and a mixture of languages to bring across the message in an entertaining way. It demonstrates the transfer of energy from one organism to another in nature. In contrast to this the chain of consumption from raw materials to the dump sites is also shown. It explores how plants and animals suffer from the effects of leach, the poison that emerges when water drains though land fill sites. It shows how we can break this cycle by changing our life styles and reducing, reusing and recycling.

4 Amanzi Obom
This show is about a married couple who perform traditional praise poems mixed with modern rap music about the qualities of water. The play takes us into the comedy husband and wife struggling as they wake up one morning to find no water coming out of their tap. The stupid husband learns all about the water cycle, where water comes from and how it is treated. The two of them decide to perform songs and dances around the community teaching every body how to save water for the benefit of their children in the future.
